Once upon a time, a long time ago there lived a young person.
I don’t recall whether it was a boy or a girl, however, it doesn’t
matter. They were young.
Also, it may not have been that long ago, but it was definitely
before now.
Anyway, this young person, whether it was a boy or a girl,
decided that it was time that they left the family home and
learned to make their way in the world.
This young person sat down with their mother and asked her,
“Dear Mother, I am about to leave home and make my way in
the world. What do you consider to be the best course of
action?”
The mother replied, “You have to learn to make your way in
the world. You must find a profession in which to make your
way!”
The young person inquired, “And exactly how am I to go
about doing this?”
The mother paused for a moment to reflect and answered as
follows, “Go into the village. Find someone that is successful
as their livelihood. Once you have found such a person,
inquire of them if you can apprentice. If this person accepts you,
you must accept this person as your teacher until you have
mastered the field that you have chosen.”
And so it was…
The young person packed up their belonging, kissed the
mother goodbye, made their goodbyes to the siblings and
proceeded to make the long journey into the village.
Of course, this excursion took several days. Our young
person walked for many miles each day and found some
convenient spot to rest in the evening.
Finally, after an exhausting trip of several days, perhaps
longer, the young person arrives in the village.
Tired, dirty and hungry our young seeker is also a little
excited. Excited to be in a new place, one that is different
from anything they have experienced previously.
